Hola bookstagrammers! How about a story of an ancient spirit lurking in a girl’s room and her murky past?
The story revolves around three protagonists — Sarojini, who comes to Delhi for her studies and lives with her aunt; Jalaj, her journalist neighbour and eventually her lover and an English woman killed in 1942 and who’s ghost still haunts Sarojini’s room. It starts with Sarojini’s dad dropping her off in the station and from the beginning, the author has managed to mainyan element of suspense with her vivid descriptions!
The ghost visits Jalaj occasionally and narrates her story as to how she was killed. Jalaj seems to be enamoured by the ghost and her narrative. Sarojini hates her expensive University and struggles to find compassionate friends, yet falls in love with Jalaj slowly. Why does the spirit tell Jalaj her story? Who was the woman Sarojini saw in the train’s window? Is there any connection between the three protagonists?
The story has a love narrative as well as a mysterious aura. The pages are rich with vocabulary, but a plethora of characters confused me. I loved how the author has deftly narrated two stories in parallel. The descriptions of Delhi, both medieval and modern are the best part in this book
” Sometimes, the crisis isn’t the loss of love or change in feelings, but life itself!”
If you love romance with a hint of suspense, this book is for you. I was a little disappointed as there was no horror in it, nevertheless the author made it up with her writing.
